Online Bloodborne Pathogens Classes

The SPCP Board of Directors has approved select BBP classes for CPCP qualifications and SPCP Trainer member compliance. Health Educators is in the final stages of preparation of their class so keep an eye on their website at hlthedu.org. Also approved is the bloodborne pathogens class from Eduwhere.com and can be accessed from the link from the SPCP website or by going here:

Several SPCP members tested this class for us with very favorable reports. Both classes will certainly make things much easier for those who do not have access to a live class within a reasonable distance.

16th Annual Convention a Huge Success!

Who would have thought we would have had 405 people attend this event?! Who would have thought the emails still keep coming in about how fabulous this convention was?!

The SPCP members gathered, almost like a family reunion, for a weekend of education, networking, and fun March 17-19. So much knowledge was gleaned, friendships were made, and the SPCP family grew stronger. Already we are getting calls and emails about next year's event. I certainly hope Houston is ready for us March 22-24, 2008 at the Inter Continental Hotel! We will rock the house for sure!

I personally can't wait until the upcoming Fall Conference September 22-23! We have a great speaker line up and as always will include the bloodborne pathogens class here at no extra charge. Many feel this to be their favorite event since it is small and intimate - remember, you have to pre-register to attend! We are back in Philly at the Crowne Plaza - it's like home!! More to come...

FDA Response to Pigment Approval Claims

Many members have called/emailed the SPCP office with reports of recorded phone messages by a permanent cosmetic pigment manufacturer. The recording stated their company was the first permanent cosmetics supply company to seek FDA approval for permanent cosmetics and that test results from the FDA research are in, and the news is exciting!

Below is the response received from the Society's FDA contact person on October 4th:

"As required by law, a color additive must be shown to be safe and the subject of a listing by the FDA in the Code of Federal Regulations prior to its use in food, drugs, cosmetics, or medical devices. The appropriate process begins with a submission of a color additive petition to the FDA. A description of that process may be accessed at the following website: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/col-toc.html.

Currently, no color additives are approved for use in tattooing and the FDA does not have a filed petition for the use of a color additive in permanent makeup tattooing. For future reference and to assist you in monitoring color additive petition activity, information on petitions currently under active review may be accessed at: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/opa-expd.html. When a color additive petition is filed, the FDA publishes a filing notice in the Federal Register. Fall Conference 2006: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

For the first time ever, on September 16th and 17th, 2006, the SPCP will cross borders and hold our Fall Conference in Canada. The SPCP is committed to providing educational venues that can be enjoyed by a larger group of members. It is important to offer additional opportunities for quality education ? you have asked for an annual Fall Conference - the SPCP has delivered.

We expect a great turnout for this event as many of you who attended the Savannah Convention were thrilled at the aspect of traveling to Canada for this conference. It will kick off with Train the Trainer given by Dixie Medford, CPCP and Elizabeth Finch-Howell, CPCP to precede the main event on Thursday, September 14th and Friday, September 15th. Saturday and Sunday?s speaker line-up is incredible and includes Judith Culp, CPCP, Pat Gauthier, Debra Guastella, CPCP, Bonnie Kirby, Dixie Medford, CPCP, and Milessa Murphy. A panel of experts also highlights the event and includes Kate Ciampi, CPCP, Elizabeth Finch-Howell, CPCP, and Mary Tanneberg, CPCP. It will culminate with the bloodborne pathogens/infection control class by David Vidra - included in the cost of attendance.

The Stage West in Mississauga, an all-suites venue with an acclaimed dinner theatre will host the Fall Conference ? check them out at http://www.stagewest.com - voted "Hotel of the Year" by the Greater Toronto Hotel Association. The event is space limited and pre-registration is required.

With nearly 200 registered attendees to date, this is the most we have ever gotten this far out from the actual convention! Our vendor room is nearly full to capacity and all the exciting plans are coming together!

We have attendees coming from all corners of the world and are confident this is going to be the best permanent cosmetics event of the year! Almost everyone who calls has told me they have allowed extra days to do some sightseeing. You many already know that Savannah is my favorite city in the USA, so feel free to drop me a line if you are not sure what to do there. Please be sure to tag on a couple days of R & R!

The SPCP Board of Directors' priority is on the member and on education for this year so two of our esteemed board members are running Train the Trainer in March: Dixie Medford, CPCP and Elizabeth Finch-Howell, CPCP. Be sure to sign up right away as spaces are limited. Remember, certification is required for trainers now so be sure to schedule your CPCP exam prior to the Train the Trainer dates. Please, please save some extra time to enjoy this beautiful city. One of my favorite place is the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences opened in Savannah as one of the South's first public museums.

SPCP Archives

In June it was announced via the SPCP newsletter that we have established a formal archive of the history of our industry. After collecting much information, tools, etc. for several years, it was time we moved forward on this project. As announced, Sue Church, Elizabeth Finch-Howell, Dixie Medford, and Pati Pavlik joins me as fellow committee persons.

We still have not gotten suggestions for a "name" for our archives...please email suggestions to me at admin@spcp.org. We have a prize for the person whose name is selected.

Keep sending in articles, books, etc. to the SPCP home office. We are also interested in obtaining some of the very earliest "pen" devices if you have them still in your possession.

The SPCP Family

At Fall Conference, our very own Debbie Guastella, convention coordinator and speaker, lovingly known as Scarlett, traveled through several states to finally end up at Pensacola, Florida to be able to fly to Philadelphia to join us. No Hurricane named Katrina was going to beat her down even though she has suffered great damage to her home, making it impossible to live there.

During the reception at this event, the attendees presented her, with much fanfare, a basket of gift cards to help her in some small way recover a bit from the disaster she faced. In her gracious way, she wholeheartedly thanked us all but wanted to pass these on to her daughter, Courtney, who lost absolutely everything.

Courtney writes:

It is hard to say thank you to people you have either never met or have only had a brief encounter with, particularly when the acts of these same people seem to warrant so much more than just some written words.

My name is Courtney Guastella. I realize that the intent at your recent SPCP Conference was to come to the aid of my mother, Debbie Guastella in a time of need, as colleagues and more importantly as her friends. My mom has always tried to teach me that God gives generously to some with the expectation that they in turn will give to others. I have always thought of God as an excellent CEO who realizes that He cannot reach us all and micromanage. Therefore, He leaves it to us to pass along the wealth of love and kindness we share to those in need. Mom calls it "paying it forward" which is exactly what she did.

I lived in an area of New Orleans called Lakeview, better known now as "ground zero". I'm sure by now you are all familiar with the 17th Street Canal which breached and broke shortly after the initial hit of Hurricane Katrina, and flooded the city of New Orleans. I lived six blocks from that breach, in a small white house with big trees and sweet neighbors.

A week ago I went back for the first time since the Saturday before the storm, when I threw some jeans and a few tee shirts into a duffle bag and left for what I thought was going to be a small inconvenience for a few days away from home. Five weeks later I returned to what can only be described as a dead place. A neighborhood that once was vibrant green, filled with noises and smiles, was now washed in a layer of brown muck and still - nothing survived. I explained to a friend sitting next to me that "heartbroken" seemed such a pale explanation.

I drove to my parents home to find more devastation and destruction, but there was some movement and life. It was then that mom gave me the bag of gift cards she received at the conference from you all. She explained it was for me to start rebuilding my life and replacing the lost things, which is all of them. So far, I have purchased new towels and some kitchen things. I am going slowly; however, those gift cards have become the bright part of my days. I go shopping whenever I can and pick something out that will become part of my new home, that is when I can return home. I put these new things in boxes and smile about what the future might hold.

In the "paying it forward" tradition, I used some of the gift cards to purchase some toys and clothing for some children at a local shelter. All I have to give right now is my sincere thanks and gratitude for your unyielding kindness to mom and me and a promise that we will rebuild and take care of one another. We are a grieving community and while we have seen the worst of humanity through this storm, we have also seen the best in folks like yourselves, and for that we are forever changed. Thank you again, Courtney Guastella

KP vs. Lasting Impressions I Case

Many of you have followed the case of KP Permanent Makeup vs. Lasting Impressions I that went to the 9th Circuit Court, to the Supreme Court, and then back to the 9th Circuit. While it has been reported in the past on another website that KP "won" this case, we have information to the contrary. In fact, Lasting Impressions registered trademark on Micro Colors still stands! The SPCP was proud to have participated in this monumental case that protects the rights of business owners, particularly those of the "SPCP family."
